Calcutta Rowing Club

History

Founded in 1858 by a small band of oarsmen, probably the oldest rowing club in the East.

The Club's crest records 1858 as its founding year. A cyclone in 1862 swept away the records, minute books, boathouse and boats. All that survives from the first year is the 1858–59 account book signed by Honorary Secretary and Treasurer John Cowie.
